Yesterday Vaughn pointed out a Princess balloon while shopping. "Uh-oh" I thought.

The checkout lady at the store made a rude comment to me about Vaughn's behavior while checking out. I held my tongue and instead of me commenting on her small mindedness and the fact that she was judging my parenting skills on the 2 minutes of seeing Vaughn and telling her how sad I thought it was for her spending her Golden Years being a checker at a big-box store, I simply told her that I didn't appreciate her comment. It pissed me off and I'm upset that I let some mean old lady get to me.

Vance and I checked on the baby birds and we now have fuzz balls with big yellow beaks. So cute. Funny to think that even in our tiny back yard, we have 4 birds nests.

After Vaughn's nap she requested that I get down the crown that she wore on her 1st birthday. I put in on her head and she said, "Hi! I'm Princess!" twice. This is a whole new can of worms.

Last night before bed I had rice milk in my cereal and today I've woken up with heel pain. Pins and needles when I walk, people. I don't think the two are related, but you just never know.

It was a full moon last night and boy, did it feel like one.

(If anyone knows something about heels, I'd love to know what's going on with my feet.)

Cowboy Upping

Here I was in the middle of beautiful weather hoping for a rainy day in order to get stuff done around the house. Turns out that the rain is not helping boost productivity around here.

It may just be the opposite.

We did make a trip to the party store yesterday in search of a Dora cake topper. We didn't find one, so I'll add that to our list for today. (It's silly that I chose to go to the party store even when I knew we were almost out of juice, milk, and bread yesterday. My priority for fun walks a dangerously close line next to the priority of need, obviously.) (This drives Justin nuts, I think.) (I may never outgrow this way of thinking.)

So today I'm cowboy-upping the side of my brain that handles all adult-like thinking and gearing up for a major weekly grocery shopping and party shopping trip. (My not so adult-like side of my brain will be busy thinking about party decorations and hoping that soccer practice gets cancelled for tonight.)

In 6 days my baby turns 2. Ciao.

Vance: "Mommy, Despereaux (as in the Tale of Despereaux, the movie) said that a book speaks to him. How does a book speak?"

Me: I quickly try to come up with a way to explain this to him and do so using examples, blah, blah, blah.

Vance: Looks at me and says as he picks up a toy car, "Why do you think these car doors move up and down like this?"

His mind is always working overtime. And as much as I love it, it wears me out.

Mo Cake

In honor of Earth Day, here's Vaughn talking about what she loves most on this earth: cake.

Vance took this picture of Vaughn about one year ago. (He took the picture, I edited it.)

He always gets good ones of Vaughn. She will never sit still for me.

Funny to think that one year ago she couldn't even walk and this afternoon she didn't want to come inside because she was too busy dancing. "I mooovin'!"

In other outdoor news, one nest of baby birds have hatched and my tomatoes and cucumbers are already dying. Yin and Yang.

I'm mentally preparing for the moving of mulch that we'll be doing later today. Hopefully we're more on target with how much we need, because it seems like last year we ordered 3.5 yards too much. We had mulch literally and physically coming out of our ears.

In the words of Vaughnie, "Happy Sunday!"

It only sprinkled here for a few minutes (if that), but there was an awesome rainbow that came out afterwards.

And because I just referred to a rainbow being awesome, you may call me a huge dork and can navigate to a much cooler site now.

Hard to tell in pictures but the stronger one was a double rainbow, so there was 3 in total. A first for me!

This weather is not helping my productivity lately.

Normal household chores have been pushed aside and new priorities are being made. (What I'm trying to tell you is that Vaughn broke my shoe organizer and my shoes are in one giant pile in the closet and it's been that way for the past couple of weeks, which is very not like me.) No one has been cleaning and dinner has become an array of glorified snacks.

Even though our allergies are in full swing, it seems downright wrong to not be outside when the weather is this beautiful.

We've been busy alright, just busy doing other things.

We've been busy checking on eggs in the birds nest of one of our trees.

Busy finding cool bugs. (What the heck is this thing? Never seen one before.)

Busy playing.

Busy eating lots of snacks on picnic blankets. (Eating outside = No mess inside!)

And busy making bubbles, riding bikes, watering plants, and things of that nature.

Actually, the only dirt that I have been cleaning up is the ring in bathtub after nighttime baths. And that seems like the only dirt that matters right now. The other cleaning can wait along with the folded laundry in baskets. Vance starts kindergarten in 3 months and I'm making the most out of the time that we have left.

Off to play!

The Garden!

Very exciting news to share...

Justin and I are now farmers.

I'd like to present our first garden. No laughing or snarky comments that our tomatoes are too close together or things of that nature. We're learning at we go.

I normally never visit this area of the yard. I discovered a jasmine plant. It smells fantastic, unfortunately you can only smell it when you're really close to it.

We're starting small, as you can see we don't have much space. I normally do the herbs in pots, but I thought I'd try them out in the ground. I forgot to buy cilantro, will have to add that later.

Let's all hope this experience stays known as The Garden! and doesn't become The Effing Garden or The Poor Garden or That Dried Up Piece of Land Next to the Jasmine Plant.

I'm off to stock up on plaid shirts and a pitchfork.

Easter 2010

I'm over the whole Easter thing but still feel the need to at least post some pictures.

Here's Vaughn hunting for some egg's at Gram's. My camera battery ran out, so I don't have any pictures of the rest of the group. The kids had a great time with the scavenger hunt and egg hunt.

The Easter Bunny left baskets for the kids in the morning. Here's Vaughn with her Dora mermaid doll and book from her basket.

Another egg hunt!

It was a beautiful day out and we spent a lot of it outside. Family baseball game.

Here's an attempt at a group picture with the kids. Great one of Ry, Jack, and Vance.

Half-ass Easter post - Done! I had hopes of a better one and was going to do a lot with the pictures I took, but ran out of time. It's been a busy week and I can't believe it's only Thursday!

Enjoy yourselves today!

This may be the best picture of the kids together on Easter. At least Vaughn is turned so you can't see the yellow stain on her shirt that she acquired minutes after putting it on.

Easter Teaser

I haven't had time to go through pictures from the weekend, but this one caught my eye. Enjoy it until I get the other ones up.

Oh, and I had Duke down to win it all, proving that you don't have to know anything about basketball to fill a winning bracket out.

Friday Rundown

Vaughn:
  • Vaughn is currently on somewhat of a hunger strike.
  • She loves being outside.
  • She loves shoes, but has to be in the right mood to try them on. Every pair we tried yesterday ended up with shouts of, "Don't wike it!"
  • She currently has limited summer clothes. Nothing is fitting from last season and everything that I bought yesterday doesn't fit, thus proving that she's still a pain to find clothes for.
Vance:
  • Vance is noted by his teachers as being one of the best eaters at school. (Lunch is provided at school, we don't pack lunch for him.) This amazes me because he still doesn't eat much at home.
  • He loves being outside.
  • Is starting to read more than a few sight words, which is really cool and freaking me out at the same time.
Me:
  • Not complaining at all, but where did Spring go? Mid 80's is summer and if it continues we'll be turning the AC on soon.
  • Loving that we've been able to spend so much time outside. We ate dinner al fresco for the first time this season last night and it was great.
  • The picture above shows how Vance has been showing Vaughn how to ride the tricycle. Yes her shoes are on the wrong feet, but she did it herself and was really proud.
  • Have run out of time.
Have a great day!

Translation:

Here it is April Fools Day and I don't have anything prepared. That's how bad things have gotten around here - nothing is done.

Vaughn ate a few bites of the salmon patties last night, as did Vance. I did not think that they would eat any of it, so I am it considering a victory. Vance already has reminded me that is pizza night and he is pumped. Have a good day!
