Wacky Wednesday

It all began with that shoe on the wall.

A shoe on the wall...? That shouldn't be there at all!

In honor of Dr. Seuss it's Wacky Wednesday at our house!

My planning was off and I waited until yesterday to try finding the Wacky Wednesday book at the library. Every copy checked out. The kids have never ready the book before so they wouldn't get what was going on so I wasn't going to do anything.

But then! The Internet! I searched last night and found an online copy of Wacky Wednesday and the kids and I read it together. Wacky Wednesday was back on!

A tree in the pantry!

What's for lunch?

Fancy decorations!

More shoes!

Chairs don't wear boots!

Juvenile and silly, yes. Right up my alley. The kids had a great time finding the wacky things this morning.

So fitting that it's Leap Day too! Hope you make the most of the extra day!

Which Meant

Sunday morning: I got up early to shower and get ready for the day. Normally I don't do this and when we decide to do something I'm the one that takes the longest to get ready. But not today! Oh, the possibilities! Justin had been gone the entire week before and who knows what the day would bring. I was just happy to not be the only adult in the house.

Backstory: When moving into this house almost 3 months ago we discovered that the stairs that lead to the basement are too small to fit most basement type things down. This has lead to a backlog of furniture that we don't know what to do with. The couch is part of the backlog inventory.
We decided that we're tired of the couch being in the office:

  • which meant we had to move it into the garage
  • which meant we then had to shrink wrap it.
  • which meant that we had to clean out the garage so we could make room for it
  • which meant I got up early, showered, and got ready to...
clean out the garage

The day, however, ended on a high note with a picnic-style Happy Hour, guacamole, the red carpet, and my favorite 3 people watching the Oscars. (Oscar, oscar! I like Billy Crystal...)

A box, a couch, and a quote.

It's recycling day today and also windy as all get out.

Last night I spent about 45 minutes breaking and cutting down boxes so that I could set them out in a nice, organized stack for the recycling man. (I'm making room for our soon-to-be garage couch. It never sold. Sawing it in half wasn't the answer, so we'll be shrink wrapping and storing it until we re-do the basement.)

So, yes. Windy, recycling day, retrieving loose pieces of cardboard...that's been my morning. Better than yesterday morning which involved a dead car, jumper cables, and a Google search for "how to jumpstart a car".

I came across a quote today that I needed:

"The most important thing that she'd learned over the years was that there was no way to be a perfect mother and a million ways to be a good one." Jill Churchill
It's been that type of week around here.

*****Happy Friday!*****

Where Inspiration Comes From

It was my day to run yesterday and I decided not to.

Vaughn, who is usually a great sleeper, woke up twice throughout the night, which was the reason I ended up sleeping in.

Finally after getting up, I walked downstairs and realized I had left the outside lights on all night. I walked over to the door and reached to turn them off. Damn. As soon as I looked out the window I saw her.

A runner. Running in the dark and in the cold. Perfect timing.

I didn't want to startle her by turning the lights off as she ran past so I waited and cursed her unknown name for making me feel bad about wanting to sit, drink coffee, and opening my computer.
I flicked the light off and headed back upstairs to change into my running clothes.

I never feel bad after a workout. I always feel bad when I choose to not.

I'm always surprised to see where inspiration comes from. Where does your inspiration come from?

Dr. Seuss City

We're gearing up for Dr. Seuss's birthday (March 2) around here!

Over the weekend, the kids and I made a Dr. Seuss inspired city using found objects around the house.

Here's how we did it!

We started by looking through Seuss books for inspiration...

and also started collecting "building materials". We raided the recycling bin and found objects around the house.

We noticed a trend in the books and decided to choose one primary color for our city. Monochromatic was our word for the day and blue was decided as our color.

We painted some of the objects and covered the rest with blue paper. Glue and tape were used to stick everything together.

Viola! A Dr. Seuss inspired city was created.

Many, many years ago when I was student teaching, my sponsoring teacher gave me this idea to do with 5th graders. However, this project can be adapted and be made harder or easier for all ages of kids. An easier version for younger kids is to make one Dr. Seuss building or house. Get creative and see what the kids can come up with - you'll be surprised!

(For extra credit - ask the kids to tell a story about what type of people live in this city!)

Have FUN with it!

Survivor Night!

It's Survivor time again!

This morning I made a quick roster of the tribes:

<<<<<<<>>>>>>>
We haven't picked teams yet - will do so before the show starts tonight.

(The boots are a bit silly, yes?)

I'm not sure what I like more - watching the show or the ritual of it. It's something to look forward to in the middle of the week. Vance gets into the show, Vaughn could care less but everyone likes that we eat pizza.

Do you watch?

Happy Heart Day

Some say Valentine's Day, some say Estate and Trust Planning Day. You know, it's a tomato, tomahto type of thing.

My husband, being the romantic that he is, scheduled a meeting for us with a lawyer to do our will today. What says romance more than the piece of mind that comes with providing security for our two goofballs?

In other words...

Happy Valentine's Day!

Believe me. I'm as tired as you are of seeing these things. Hopefully this will be the last time you'll see Valentine Moustache Pops here. Ever. The kids are excited to hand them out today and for their class parties.

Here's what's going on in the dining room right now.

Yes, it's over the top but it's hard corralling the kids when it comes to decorating. Still don't know what's on the menu for tonight. I'm thinking noodles of some sort. We'll see! No plans for dessert yet either.

What's on your menu?

Dinner Without Crayons: Our Big Night Out.

It's been 11 months since Justin and I have had a date or any kid-free time for that matter. No lunches or quick errands ran without them, nothing.

(We did spend 4 hours in December sitting at the closing table with our bank guy and our realtor during the Closing Situation kid-free. I'm not counting that but I am thankful for my mom and my aunt who wrangled kids for us during that time.)

So, yes. Here we were last time on March 7, 2011. On a beach. Around a fire. Thoroughly enjoying a night out while on vacation.

Tonight Vaughn's school is hosting Parent's Night Out, God love them. As soon as Vance's basketball practice is over we're going to shove them (lovingly) through the school doors and run away enjoy our 2.5 hours alone.

(Where we'll go to dinner and end up talking about them the whole time because to date they're the most lovable yahoo's that we've ever met.)

***************
Oh, that's so nice of you to ask about our office!

It's shaping up nicely, thankyouverymuch. Desks, chairs, and the bookcase are in place. Curtains will be hung this weekend along with other wall stuff. On the other hand we still can't get rid of the couch that's too big to go into our basement. It's in the office eating up space. We've had a few people interested on Craigslist but they flounder and never end up calling back.

The only thing wrong with this couch is the fact that it doesn't fit down our staircase. It is stylish. It is comfortable. It's hardly been used.

So now here's our choices:
1. Shrink wrap it and put it in our already crowded garage for when we open up the walls to finish the basement and can fit it down (which also means we won't be able to get it back out if we ever move).
2. Sawzall the end off (nicely where the arm meets), fit it down the stairs, nail the sucker back together, and get on with our day.

Number 1 was Justin's idea. Number 2 was mine. We tend to bump heads sometimes.

***************
What's everyone else up to this weekend? Exciting plans? Do tell!
Happy Friday!
